According to statista.com in 2012 only 6% of campers were black. Over the course of the last decade that number has more than doubled to 14% in 2021. As a result, an industry that has not typically been that diverse is slowly changing. What is also changing is the number of RV purchases by people of color, including myself. The pandemic and the isolation was the entry point for many new RV owners. During the height of COVID 19 cases the one way to still travel, be self contained and stay safe was via RV travel.

What I’ve discovered in our RV travels over the past two years is, although there are not many people of color at RV parks, most people in the parks are very friendly. Among RVers there seems to be this shared appreciation and connection centered around being able to experience the outdoors in a meaningful and unique way. Here are some things to consider if you want to get into RVing:

  • Cost — An RV purchase is a big ticket item. Buying used will usually save you a lot of money. If you are going to finance the RV, doing your research is important to find the best rates and loan packages.
  • What type of RV do you want? — There are four main types of RVs — Class A (the larger motorhomes), Class B (vans), Class C (bunk over cab), and travel trailers. Knowing what type of RV you want that fits your needs is important.
  • How often will you use it? — This is an important consideration when purchasing an RV. If you are only going to camp a couple of weekends a year this is probably not for you. If you are going to use the RV for tailgating, day trips, and frequently on weekends it is a valuable asset.
  • RV operation and maintenance — Knowing how to operate the various appliances and equipment in an RV and how to maintain it is very important. No matter how good or new your RV is something will break. Having savings and a good RV repair person at your disposal is a good idea.
  • Try before before you buy — If you are unsure if RV ownership is for you, rent one for a weekend. Cruise America, El Monty RV and Outdoorsy all offer RV rental opportunities.
