Camping is one of the most enjoyable experiences there is. It is the place where traditions are made and families bond. Camping allows you to relax and enjoy nature. The question is why are so many people of color reluctant to go camping?

negative history

For some, there is a negative connotation with the woods and secluded areas based on history. During post reconstruction up to Jim Crow and beyond the woods have often times represented a place of trauma for people of color. These stories of trauma have been passed down from generation to generation. They usually include a few things—a small town or rural area, the woods and racism. What is problematic is many of the campsites just happen to be in rural areas and small towns— some of which historically have not been the most inviting to people of color. The apprehension when it comes to camping and the woods when put in context has merit.

exposure

Exposure to outdoor activities has a lot to do with a person’s comfort level with it. I never went camping, fishing, hunting or hiking in my childhood. I grew up in a major metropolitan area and— although I was exposed to outdoor activities like going to the park— I never went camping until I was an adult. Many people of color just haven’t been exposed to camping. For camping in particular, there are things you need to know how to do for the experience to be enjoyable. Once my wife and I were exposed to camping it became one of our favorite things to do. Exposure is key.

the solution

  • Education — Those of us that have been camping and enjoy it need to educate others on how to go camping. This includes taking people camping for the first time, showing them the various types of camp dwellings, and providing tips to them on camping safety.
  • Share Locations — Campsites that have been inviting to people of color need to be celebrated. State and national parks are a great starting point for new campers. They are my personal favorites. There are many private campgrounds that are also great.
  • Go in groups — One of the best ways to experience camping is with family and friends. Go as a group, rent several campsites next to each other and enjoy the experience.
