Near the Old Town area of Alexandria, Virginia there is a scenic park under the Woodrow Wilson Bridge called Jones Point Park. If you currently live in DC or have lived in DC previously you know there is a surprising amount of green space and parks in the area. Jones point is unique because it offers views of the boat cruises, water taxis, planes landing towards Reagan airport, and there is a fishing pier.
the good
- The view — The view in all directions from this fishing pier are some of the best in the area. From the fishing pier you can see Old Town in one direction and the National Harbor in the other.
- Isolation — The fishing pier, due to it’s location, isn’t as packed as some of the other ones in the area. Less crowd means its easier to find a better spot to fish from
- Virginia fishing license cost — A non resident one day fresh water fishing license in Virginia is only $8
- Other amenities at the park — When you need a break from fishing, Jones Point has a walking trail, basketball courts and bike trails.
- Large blue catfish — People have been know to catch large catfish from this pier (their is a catch to this — see the bad)
the bad
- Fish restrictions — Due to some contamination levels in the Potomac there are restrictions on the number of fish you can consume out of this part of the potomac. This restriction varies by species.
- Debris in the river — I lost a lot of leaders from this pier because my line got caught up multiple times on debris in the water
- Hard to reel in a fish — Due to the debris in the water it is also hard to reel in a fish because they often get caught on things in the water
the summary
Fishing at Jones Point is more about the view than the actual fishing. It is worth a visit if you are in Alexandria, but it is not the best spot to fish from in the area due to restrictions and the debris in the water.
